Stages of Speech For Toddlers

Having your child finally start to speak is one of the first milestones for a toddler. Their speech may not sound like much at first, but it is a step towards communication. Language development starts to occur gradually over time when toddlers interact with adults, and it's a very natural process. We as parents are the most influential people when it comes to teaching our toddlers how to speak. Your children will look at you when you speak and try to imitate the sounds. One of the best ways to help your toddler's speech development is to talk to them. There are plenty of times when my toddler is speaking to me, he's 14 months, in his own language and I have a conversation with him. Even though I don't understand him, I'm still helping him to develop his speech.
Reading is another great activity that parents can do with their toddlers to help speech development. Introducing your child to books at this stage helps prepare them for preschool. And the key here is to set some time aside everyday and read to your toddler.Toddlers will learn speech at different rates, some faster than others. But the important thing is that it should be a steady development.

Here is a list of milestones a toddler will reach given his age.

Starting at 12 months. Most toddlers will be babbling in their own language. Parents and close relatives will be able to understand them, but to everyone else it is just babbling. They will have a 1-5 word vocabulary and can point to their nose, ears or other body part. At this age toddlers will start to understand the power of communication. An example of this is your child asking to be picked up to reach something they can't.

Starting at 18 months. Toddlers at this age will have about a 100 word vocabulary, most of which will be items your toddler uses and sees such as a spoon, car, cup, etc. Keep in mind most of the words will be unclear, but they will all have meaning. They will start joining words together and be able to say their name.

Starting at 24 months. Your toddler at this age will have a greater vocabulary and will start to learn how to regulate his volume when speaking. They will start to understand what "I", "me" and "want " mean, and be able to answer simple questions like "Are you hungry?", or "Do you want water?"

This is only a brief list of the milestones your toddler will achieve. Furthermore, all children are different, so the rates at which they achieve them, will vary.

Husband Says Kids Out Of The Bed

Many wives and mothers have been given an ultimatum from their husbands. This ultimatum may be “either it is me in the bed or the kids in the bed”! Many fathers are ready for their children to be placed in a baby crib or toddler bed at night rather than in their bed. Mothers of small children are guilty of this because it is naturally a mother’s instinct to shelter her small children. It can be just as hard on a mother as it is for the child to make the transition to a baby crib or toddler bed. A mother naturally has a need for her children to be close to her, especially at night. Children also have a natural instinct to yearn to be by their mother or parent, especially at night. For many parents the battle of getting their children to sleep in their own baby crib or toddler bed can be a tough one to overcome.
A mother must remember she is also a wife. Sometimes these roles can merge into just one role, that of being a “mother”. This is not something that a wife sets forth to do intentionally but at times can happen. Being a mother can take precedence because of the overwhelming need from her children for her attention. But there is also a need from the husband. To strike a good medium can be challenging at best. So parents have to weigh the advantages and disadvantages to co-sleeping. Many parents think that a child sleeping in their own baby crib or toddler bed is the only option. Others may feel totally separated from their child sleeping in a baby crib or toddler bed .Every parent has a different opinion concerning this subject so one must consider all of the pros and cons concerning this topic. There are great tips for transitioning a child from co-sleeping into sleeping in their own baby crib or toddler bed.
Sleep sharing can also affect your love life. Having your child in a baby crib or toddler bed each night can increase your level of intimacy with your spouse both in quality and quantity. Spontaneity between couples when the baby is in the bed isn’t really an option. This awkward situation leaves couples having to make other plans for their time alone. These plans sometimes are put on the back burner ultimately going neglected at times. This neglect can sometimes make one spouse resent the other for having to make these kinds of compromises. The likelihood of intimacy among couples whose children sleep in a baby crib or toddler bed tends to be much more frequent than those who make a decision to co-sleep.
Ultimately the child and both parents should be able to benefit from the decision. Everyone has an opinion on what they feel is best for children but all families situations are different. Whatever the decision please make sure it is the right one for your family.

What New Parents Can Do To Keep Their Infants Safe

A baby crib is still the safest place for babies to sleep. Many infants die each year due to parents allowing them to sleep in their parental beds at night rather than in a baby crib. Infants can be placed in danger through this co-sleeping arrangement. Many times an infant becomes entrapped or wedged between the mattress and another object. Suffocation can come from an airway obstruction when the baby is face down on a waterbed mattress or a very soft mattress. A firm quality baby crib mattress is the safest choice for an infant to sleep upon.
Dream On Me Classic Convertible Crib

Fatal injury can also come in form of strangulation because of rails or openings on beds that allow a baby’s body to pass through while entrapping the head. A baby crib, such as the Dream On Me 4-in-1 Eden Convertible Crib, is specifically built to prevent this type of accident from occurring. Also known to happen is a parent rolling on top of or against the baby while sleeping. Many parents feel they are being a good parent by keeping their infant close rather than in a baby crib. Suffocation or strangulation caused by entrapment of the child’s head in various structures of the bed is common. A baby crib is safe as they are free of these types of structures. Entrapments occur between the mattress and the wall, bed frame, headboard, footboard, bed railings or adjacent furniture. Another safe quality of a baby crib is that there are not any wedged areas subject to entrapment.
Convertible Crib

One of the most tragic aspects of these deaths is that they are largely preventable. In many cases, the parent placing the baby in the adult bed was unaware of or underestimated the danger posed. A JPMA certified baby crib is still the safest place for an infant to sleep. Mothers who breastfeed should be alerted to this hazard and should be encouraged to return the baby to the baby crib after breast-feeding.

Does Your Baby Crib Have The JPMA Seal?

Since its inception in 1976, the JPMA Certification Program continues to grow and play an important role in the juvenile products industry. Currently, more than 2,000 products are JPMA Certified in 20 categories!
ASTM International develops and publishes the standards. JPMA manufacturers, retailers, other industry members, consumer groups and staff from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) are involved in the development of the standards.

The JPMA Certification Seal on a product tells consumers this product has been verified as conforming to the requirements established by ASTM, through independent laboratory testing and follow-up on-site inspection of the manufacturer’s production line. The manufacturers that participate in the JPMA Certification Program are held to high standards and are obligated to meet those principles with every product. Our symbol of certification is a symbol of confidence that the juvenile products have met these performance standards. This confidence extends to parents in the buying decisions they make.

Preventing Baby Crib Injury

Around 10,000 infants and toddlers are hurt in a baby crib and/or a playpen each year. Many of these happened among children that were in age range 1-2 years old. This is the general age of children that are trying to climb out of their playpen and/or baby crib. Many of these children may be tall enough to transfer into a toddler bed style bed position. There are a few things to remember to reduce these types of injury among infants and toddlers.
*Parents can help prevent injuries by lowering the infant baby crib mattress when children grow tall enough to lean over the rails. When they are seemingly restless within the bedding area. Maybe seeing signs they have outgrown their restricted area.
*When children are starting to lean over the rail with either their head or legs, this is a good time to transition into a toddler bed style position of your convertible baby crib or into a separate toddler bed.
*Children should be moved to a toddler bed when they reach 35 inches tall.
*Make sure you purchase a sturdy baby crib. An infant baby crib is still the safest place to sleep for smaller infants and toddlers. They should be placed on their backs, with no padding or pillows.
A convertible crib that converts into a toddler bed is a good transition for baby as they grow. The transition into the toddler bed is much smoother and safer for the child as they are remaining in their comfort zone.
You can visit JPMA- Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association for more information on crib safety .

Toddler Bed Tips

Some tips to remember concerning a toddler bed for your child after transition from baby crib.

When baby is ready to move out of the baby crib, be sure to follow these guidelines and tip when selecting the right toddler bed.
1) You need to check the joints of the toddler bed for any looseness, do this periodically as well.

2) Always choose those toddler beds with low profile design for added safety, this helps if child falls out of the bed, less injury.

3) Always have toddler bed in a room away from windows, wall heaters, drapes and blind cords.

4) Place headboard against wall rather than the side of the toddler bed, so that the child does not get trapped in between wall and bed.

5) Just as in your baby crib, make sure that the toddler bed is sturdy with no fear of collapsing.

6) When storing the toddler bed or baby crib make sure you attach with tape, the instruction manual to the bed , on the bottom of the bed. Just in case the box is misplaced or instructions get misplaced from box. This is especially important for convertible cribs as they need to be adjusted as needed. Instructions are often placed on bottom of mattress platform.

7)Remember manufacturers websites will provide instruction manuals as well.

8)Remember if baby crib is a convertible to store those additional parts in a cool, dry place for future use. Keep instructions and parts in a safe place.

9)Label all parts from a convertible crib before storing, you will be glad you did.

10) MOST IMPORTANT- Make sure toddler bed and baby crib have the JPMA certification seal.

Airport Security Tips When Traveling With Infants/Toddlers

Air travel with infants and toddlers can be very stressful! What am I talking about? It is even stressful for us adults! Here are a few tips when traveling with your toddler and infant.  The TSA will screen the little ones before they can go through security checkpoints. You are to never leave children in baby carriers , baby stroller, double stroller, during security procedures. All carry-on baggage, including children’s bags and items, must go through the X-ray machine.  Examples include: diaper bags, blankets, and toys. All child-related equipment that will fit through the X-ray machine must go through the X-ray machine.  Examples include:  baby stroller, double strollers, carriers, car seats, backpacks, stroller double canopies and baby slings.
At checkpoints, collapse or fold your child-related equipment, such as baby stroller.  Secure items that are in the pockets, baskets, or attached to the equipment and place it on the X-ray belt for inspection. Plastic bins are provided to deposit such items. If any of your child-related equipment does not fit through the X-ray machine such as a double stroller security officers will visually and physically inspect it.
If you are carrying your child through the metal detector and the alarm sounds, our Security Officer will have to additionally screen both you and your child.Remove babies and children from their baby stroller or infant carriers so that our Security Officers can screen them individually. You may not pass the child to another person behind you or in front of you during this process.Do not pass your child to the Security Officer to hold.
